From Original, name and exact date of paper unknown, but about 1932. Mrs. Susan Pope Widely Beloved Woman, is Dead Fruitful, Unselfish Life Spent on Plantation at Zebulon Zebulon Ga. Dec. 27 Death Tuesday morning took Mrs. Susan G. Pope, one of the most widely beloved women in middle Georgia at the home of her daughter Mrs.Wm. B. Baker at Woolsey. Mrs. Pope who was 85 years old was the widow of Judge James S. Pope, one of the eminent members of the Georgia bar during the nineties. Judge Pope died more than thirty years ago. (1900) Death came after she was sick for several days and resulted directly from pneumonia complications. Mrs. Pope's health, despite her advanced age, had been good, and she maintained until sealed by her illness a vigor of mind and body which kept intatc one of the most gracious personalities to survive the old south. She was the daughter of Colonel Jacob Martin and Martha Martin (Martha Carolyn Howe). Her father was one of the noted lawyers of the state and a pioneer in the upbuilding of this section. The sketch of his life in "bench and Bar of Georgia", published in 1848 states that he was being considered as a candidate for governor when death took him at the age of 37. Mrs. Pope was born in 1847 in the ancestral home of the beautiful spacious plantation which overlooks Zebulon froma hilltop a mile south of the town. She lived the whole of her unselfish, fruitful life in the home which has been owned by her family for many generations. Saw the Boys Return As a girl, she sat on the shaded comfortable porch of the old homestead and watched the shattered remnants of the Confederacy straggling back to their homes. An Article in the Atlanta Journal Magazine about her experiences at that time quotes her as follows: " After the long days of anxiety, it was terrible to see each train that came into Griffin bring dozens of wounded and sick soldiers. Soon the hospitals overflowed, and the Courthouse, public buildings, stores, colleges and even private homes were filled with cots, and the patients made as comfortable as possible with the limited means we possessed. Already we had used our linen underwear, sheets, and table linen for bandages, and raveled them into lint for wound dressings." Passing through the tragic era she became one of the first students at the old Synodical College in Griffin from which she was graduated in 1864-without a diploma, as her reminiscences reveal, because no diplomas could be obtained in those harse years. She was maried to Judge Pope October 2, 1865. (Zebulon, Pike, Ga) The bitterness which filled the scenes of her childhood never touched her heart nor clouded her lovely temperament. Her life was a memorial of kindness and charity toward all. Writer of Poetry Possessing a rare literary gift, Mrs. Pope had written many poems of charm and distinction, several of which appeared in a recent anthology printed by the Oglethorpe Press. Her muse served her in age as well as in youth and several of her poems, written after she has passed eighty, rank among the finest products of her pen. Mrs. Pope was a member and one of the most active workers in the Methodist Church of Zebulon. She had taught a Sunday school class whose members passed through several generations. Mrs. Pope is survived by two sons, E.M. Pope of Zebulon, and Ernest Pope of Atlanta, three daughters, Mrs. W.B. Baker and Mrs. Katherine Pope Merritt, of Woolsey, and Mrs. W.E. Thomas of Valdosta and a sister Mrs. Lutie Head of Zebulon. Among her grandchildren are seven Atlantians, Dr. W. Pope Baker, A. Ice and Coal Company; J.S. Pope city editor of the Atlanta Journal, Warren Pope. Other grandchildren are E.M. Pope, Jr., Katherine Pope, Thomas and Mrs. Ruth Thomas Converse, of Valdosta, W.M.
