Cannafax Obituaries


Impressive funeral sevices for Mr. Ollie Joe CANNAFAX prominent Pike County farmer, were conducted from the Zebulon Methodist Church this morning. Rev. W. J. CULPEPPER, the pastor officiated. Burial was in the Zebulon church yard with Frank S. PITTMAN, funeral director in charge. Pallbeares were Bill and Jack ELLIOT, Horace REEVES, Earnest PARKER, Doug MCKINLEY and Frank YEAGER. Mr. Cannafax 32 years of age, was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon near his home at Bluff Springs, three miles east of Zebulon, he died two or three hours later in Strickland Memorial Hospital from gunshot wounds in the chest and face. Pike Sheriff J. C. BENNETT said he had arrested Charlie JOSEY, 30, a negro in connection with the slaying, and that Josey was being held on a charge of murder.

Mr. Cannafax was born and reared in Pike County and a member of one of the county's most prominent families. He was the son of O. J. Cannafax and the late Mary Ella WOOD Cannafax.

Surviving, in addition of his father, are his wife Evelyn BLANTON Cannafax; two children Betty and Billy Cannafax; two brothers Marvin and Gordon Cannafax, all of Pike County.

Mrs. F. A. Cannafax,one of the well known women of her community, died at the home of her son, Mr. Morgan Cannafax at Milner's cross roads Sunday morning last and was buried Monday at Ebenezer Church. Mrs. Cannafax was eighty four years old and scores of friends through out the county morn her departure.

Mr. Ollie Jones Cannafax, 78, of Rt.1, Zebulon, died at the Griffin Spalding County Hospital last friday morning.

Mr. Cannafax was a well known Pike County farmer who has been retired for several years. He was a life long resident of Pike County and was a member of the Zebulon Methodist Church where he attended the Men's Bible Class.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Zebulon Methodist Church with Rev. Thomas C. LANFORD and the Rev. Gerald NOFFSINGER officiating. Burial was in the Ebenezer Methodist Church Cemetery with Haisten Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Cannafax is survived by two sons, J. G. Cannafax and J. Marvin Cannafax both of Zebulon, one brother C. O. Cannafax, one sister Mrs. J. A. GORDY of Zebulon, seven grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren.

Mrs. O. J. Cannafax, wife of Ollie J. Cannafax, one of Pike County's best known planters, died at their home near Zebulon Monday night after a lingering illness of many months. Mrs. Cannafax before her marriage was Miss Mary Ella WOOD, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Wood of Zebulon. Her mother was buried just six weeks ago.

Mrs. Cannafax was forty years of age. She was one of the most beloved women of Pike County and her passing has caused keen sorrow among a large circle of friends in Zebulon and surrounding communities.

Funeral services were held at Ebenezer Methodist Church Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. Rev. BARTON officiating. Interment was in the Ebenezer Cemetery. In addition to her husband, Ollie J.Cannafax, she is survived by four sons J. G. Cannafax of Concord, O. J, F. M, and J. M. of Zebulon; her aged father J. C. Wood of Zebulon; four sisters, Mrs. George WHITE of Sand Mtn. Ala. Mrs. Troy BUSH, Mrs. DeWitt ALLEN, of Zebulon, Mrs. W. C. WILLIAMSON of Williamson, and two brothers, R. S. Wood of Barnesville and Paul Wood of Los Angeles, Cal.

Mrs. Mattie Cannafax died at her home near Zebulon Thursday after a very short illness. Mrs. Cannafax was sixty-one years of age. She was one of the most beloved women of Pike County and her passing has caused keen sorrow among a large circle of friends in Zebulon and surrounding communities.

Funeral services were held at Ebenezer Methodist Church Friday at 3 p.m. Rev. E. A. Barton officiating. Interment was in the Ebenezer Cemetery.

Mrs.Cannafax is survived by three sons, C. O; O. J; and W. W. Cannafax all of Zebulon. one daughter Mrs. John A. Gordy of Milner and six grandchildren.
