Kingman P. Moore, M.D., was born near Bolingbroke in Monroe Co., Ga., on
6 May 1844. He was the third child and eldest son of seven children born to
David Herbert Moore and Susan Virginia (Callaway) Jarrett. His father was a
Baptist minister and farmer in Monroe and Pike counties. His early education
was in the common schools, Hilliard Institute in Forsyth, Ga., and Gordon
Institute in Barnesville, Ga.
In August 1861, at age 16, Kingman enlisted in the "Barnesville Blues",
a unit designated as Company D, 3rd Battalion Georgia Voluntary Infantry.
The battalion was sent to join the Army of Northern Virginia. He became
severely ill from measles and was discharged as unfit for duty and returned
home to Pike Co. After recovery, he enlisted in Captain Scogins' Battery of
the Griffin Light Artillery (Church Bell Artillery) and served through the
remainder of the war (His memoir of his service is located elsewhere on this
website.).
After farming and teaching school, Kingman began the study of medicine
under Dr. George M. McDowell and Dr.D. B. Searcy of Forsyth. He attended
medical school in Baltimore, Md., and Atlanta, Ga., graduating in the Fall of
1868. He started his medical practice in Knoxville, Macon Co. He also
practiced in Forsyth for a few years before moving to Macon, Bibb Co., where
he remained for the rest of his life. He served terms as president of the
Macon and Georgia Medical Associations.
On 29 Jan 1867, Kingman married Sarah Martha Milner (b 23 Dec 1844 near
Barnesville). They had five children, two sons and three daughters, all born
in Knoxville, Ga. The family was very active in Baptist church affairs.
Toward the end of his life he spent increasing time on the Atlantic coast of
Florida in the Pompano area. He died on 8 Jan 1922, at the home of his
daughter in Pompano, Fl. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Macon, Ga.
