Moon Cemetery

Transcribed by Sandra Ann (Horton) Brown; Contributed by Mary Jewell (Horton) Hall, permissions granted by all participants.

Taking highway 16 west out of Griffin, Georgia approximately ten to twelve miles,
turn right on Moon Road. Approximately one mile on left there is an old cemetery. Out of
twenty marked graves, most were Moons. One was spelled Moone, but his wife's name was
spelled Moon. There were several unmarked slabs or markings so faint they were hard to read.
There were also several that only had large rocks at the head and foot. Below is a list
of all the marked, readable graves and their inscriptions.

Howell Clark Moon. Born 8-31-1912 Died 9-1-1935 Inscription HUSBAND

Lavonia V. Moon and Layayette P. Moon were in ajoining graves with no inscriptions.
Lavonia Born 11-5-1872 Died 1-1-1957
Layayette Born 3-6-1862 Died 3-12-1938

Lowell Henry Moon Born 9-11-1908 Died 7-27-1967 Inscription: Called home by Jesus a true
and valued friend. (This grave was between two blank slabs.)

Cecil R Moon. Born 8-31-1885 Died 6-17-1918 Inscription on slab: CR was an Army boy and
was buried in Army array. He claimed this life to be a joy but now he has gone away.
Inscription on head stone: Up right and just he was ------. (Could not read the rest)

TJM all that was on an infant grave headstone.

T.J. Moone Born. 7-20-1835 Died. 6-10-1910 Inscription: We loved him but God loved him more.
The bright angel came and took him to the bright celestral shore gone to dwell with the
ones gone before.

Susie F. Moon Born 11-9-1872 Died 9-24-1905 Inscription: We loved her yes we loved her
but angels loved her more and they have sweetly called her to yonder shinning shore.
(T.J and Susie are side by side with an infant grave with no markings beside Susie. However
their last names spelled differently on head stones.) Next to the unmarked infant grave
is another head stone that reads: The infant children of Mr. And Mrs. T. J. Moon with the
inscription: And we long to cross the river and long to rest upon the shore there to see
and know and love them with the savor ever more. Next to this is another blank infant slab.
Next is another small slab of TJB Moon Born 10-5-1856 Died 1-12-1861 with this inscription:
Earth has lost its look of gladness. Heaven seems to us more bright since the spirit of our
dear one took its happy homeward flight. On TJ grave the spelling is MOORE, but on their
children's grave his name is spelled MOON.

One lone grave: Peter M. Bethune with COIA under the name and 22 GA Hvarty under that and
CSA on bottom line. (No dates)

Next are two very old graves with very unique head stones. Both are Woodmen of the World
memorial stones. One is a carved stone to appear to be a tree trunk resting on four cut
logs. It belongs to: J.F. Posey Born 9-28-1893 Died. 10-14-1918. Inscription on
head stone: Blesssed are the dead that die in the Lord. Foot stone: James F. Posey
Georgia under name. Next line reads: PVT 157 Depot Brig. Last line: 10-14-1918.

The other grave next to Posey is also Woodmen of the world Memorial and this grave is
sinking into ground badly as are some other graves that are unmarked.
A.H.S. Moon Born. 11-12-1866 Died. 5-9-1931 Slab reads; FATHER gone but not forgotten.
Grave next to this one is old slab with T W I WP Y MOON scratched into slab.

One lone grave: James Edward Bates. 1899 . 1970 This is inside small metal plate
bearing info McDonald Chapel INC.

In next plot is one infant grave marked with blank rocks. Then three old slabs, one with
Herman Lee Bates, one with Dora Bates and the last with D R Bates. All these appear to
have been written with a stick or finger in wet cement.

Last lone grave is of an infant: Harold Watson Inscription: Infant son of H U Watson
1-10-1941 I love you Jesus
