wallbash.gif William M. Tolbert born July 1845 died between 1900 and 1910. Buried Harris-Lord Cemetery Jackson Co. Georgia. Married twice...Catherine Talula ("Lula") Martin who died apparently from complications of childbirth in Oct. 1884 He remarried July 7, 1885 to Mary Wood who seems to have died about 1892 after the birth of her youngest son. Family says she had typhoid while pregnant.
Those are the "facts". William....most commonly called "Billy" seems to appear on the census in 1850 as Marion and 1860 as William in the household of Sarah Tolbert in Jackson Co. GA Family says he claimed to have a brother, Jack, and one named Oliver. Jack appears on both these censuses in the household with Sarah as Andrew Jackson Tolbert. Sarah is not likely to have been their mother as her husband, Tapley, died fighting Indians in 1836. She might possibly have been keeping company with another man...but she would have been rather old to have children as she was born in 1802. People have tried to say that Billy and Jack are the sons of one of Sarah's sons. I can't find evidence of that. People have also said Sarah had one other son William L. , besides the three everyone knows about: Calvin, Levi and John. Billy is probably not a son of one of these three as none of them were married until a good bit after these boys were born. I find not a shred of evidence of Sarah having William L. He did exist and married Caroline Hutson in 1844 and moved to Clarke Co and raised a family there. Everyone has said for years that he went to Alabama..but he was in Clarke Co. up until the War Between the States, in which he served, and died either during the War or shortly afterwards...as Caroline is listed as a widow in 1870.
The census records for 1820 to 1840 only show Sarah and Tapley with the three sons previously mentioned.
Sarah was a Tolbert before she married Tapley in Clarke Co GA in 1824. I have no idea who her family was, nor who Tapley's may have been. There are no wills for any of these folks. No obit that I have found for Billy, Lula or Mary. I have not even heard of an inventory of goods made after Billy died.
Logically you know he and brother Jack must have been tied to Sarah somehow or why would they be living with her on those two censuses and that tells you they were there at least 10 years.
His tombstone is one placed by the SCV and has no info other than name and unit. He did claim that he went to war in place of one of his brothers who had small children. It wasn't Jack..he was killed in the war.
IF there is a single soul with either information or a suggestion I would be eternally grateful.

If you do have any thing at all on my William I would so love to have it. How long have you been researching this family? I have been flogging Sarah and Tapley until I am nearly cross-eyed. I think they are probably tied to Harmon somehow..but I'm darned if I can figure out how. You know Sarah was a Tolbert before she married Tapley?
