Genealogists/Family Historians
offers insight into the lives of people, their families and our history. Because the records at the National Archives come from every branch of the Federal government, almost all Americans can find themselves, their ancestors, or their community in the archives. Knowing how a person interacted with the government is key to a successful search.
This is a wonderful page it will bring you to pages where you can find war records, and other information

Thanks I have been researching my Dad's and Grandfather's military history. My dad's unit has a website which has pics of him but so far I have not found anything on my Grandfather in my research.

That sounds so interesting. I have come across a lot of old military info from my great grandfather and other relatives but I will go check out that site now too-thanks for posting.
I think the war information is facinating...I was even able to re-connect our family with some "lost" extended family b/c of a mutual relative I was seeking info on on his units website. I think the internet every day!

I was wondering if anyone knew how to get pics, if there are any, of crewmen of the U.S.S. Paul Hamilton? It was sunk in 1944. (off the coast of algiers) I finally got some pics of the ship, but would love to have pics of my uncle, whom I never got to meet, in uniform or something. The pic I use on here is of him. Thanks, Leslie

I am talking off the top of my head here...but have you tried seeing if there is a "group" online for USS Paul Hamilton. Alot of the military units and so forth have groups...if they do then you might run into someone with some pictures of the folks you need to see. I know I have several of my Daddy and some of the guys he was stationed on Saipan with during WWII. It's hard to know the best place to post them tho,,..because I have no idea where the guys were from.
Maybe we need a "place" to post military pictures. A lot of those men came home with dozens of photos of them in exotic places with their buddies.(Women too of course)...Daughter can you or Gerri tell us if that's possible on here. Who knows I may have somebody's father in my photo box. Any war of course...or even peace time pictures of servicemen.

which site in particular are you referring to? the national archives site really isnt going to have much to "look up" I think they have some census and passenger lists you can go thru, but for the most part it tells you what they have so you can "order" records

Hi Gerri,
You seem to have a lot of the same names in your family that I do. Maybe we are "cousins". Check out my msg on Information About Me and see if maybe we cross somewhere.
Thanks,

Well, I of course have to tell the tale of my find.
My g.g.g.grandfather David Howard enlisted in the "Civil War" in 1862 for 2 years. He had just purchased what I found was swamp land in Livingston Co., IL for $1 just prior to enlisting. He had 5 daughters and 1 son. When David enlisted, he was a private in the 129th Comp C of Livingston Co., IL at the age of 47. He was killed in 1864 in Resaca, GA and had recently been promoted to Corporal. No sooner was the news received that David was killed and their only son enlisted in the war. His son Alvah had just attained 18 years and enlisted for 1 year. He was mustered out in New Orleans, LA in 1865 and was a decorated war soldier.
Well, I sent away for both of their enlistment papers, I got nothing back on Alvah, but David had a stack.
In the pension papers, my g.g.g.grandmother had to prove she was David Howard's widow. She had to come up with a marriage licence, which turned out to be in Peoria Co., IL, it has her maiden name, it has witnesses and names of her midwives and where 3 of thier 6 children were born and when. There was a lot of other information, but those were the few things that really helped me in my research.
Just wanted to let people know that if they had ancestors who died in the war, it is really worth it to seek those pension papers. It took nearly 3 months to get mine back at a cost of about $37.

Why did it cost you for the records? I can not get my dad's pension papers.

HOw lucky you are to have gotten such a gold mine of info. Tell me, was David buried at Resaca? I have been on that battlefield and to the little church where so many of them are buried.

Steph

There used to be a little church or chapel or something there at the cemetery. I'd have to dig out the pictures from that battle....just drawing a blank right now. Seeing a white chapel in my head....but how many places like that did we go.? You were there most recently...so if it isn't there now....then ???????? Or is is down the road from the cemetery?
Let me see if I can contact one of the guys or the women and ask them.

I know we've been up there about 3 times in the last year.....there isnt a chapel at the cemetery itself..unless we are talking about two dif cemeteries.
The one Im talking about is on the road that dead ends into the rail road tracks

Shani is right...I checked with someone who lives up there.
I got permission from a Mr.Talley to post his survey of the cemetery at Resaca...I will do so on the forum I posted other cemeteries on. Shannon may contribute a picture of the cemetery itself.
It is a Confederate Cemetery. The Federals who died in the battle at Resaca are buried at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

I sent to the archieves for one of my ancestors in the Revolutionary War and got an e-mail back that they had nothing on him. I even used alternate spellings of the name and had his unit information.
What else can I do to get copies of his records? I have some information but need verification for it.
The person is Anthony Clippinger (Kleppinger)

HAve you checked the DAR books. They may have the info you need and then you may find a new way to have the archives search for him?

Just to add to Steph's reply, If they are in the DAR book(and your really interested) you can apply for the last approved application associated to that individual. To do that contact your local DAR group and they can help you, I know my local branch was/is willing to help me. It only costs $10. (that's cheap compared to some things) I got mine and found that I only have to go back to my gggrandfather in order to become a member. After I become a member, I hope I can contact the lady that filed this application and find out why her great grandfather was disinherited. Inquiring mind wants to know!
I also found proof to some iffy dates that I had. I've been told that these ladies check to make sure your I's are dotted and T's are crossed before they'll allow you in.

I plan to order a few Civil War pension files in the next 2 weeks.
Anyone find that the files included places of birth for parents of the soldier?
Two of the files I'm ordering are for sons of an Irish immigrant. I'm hoping the files show the town or county in which their father (my 4th great-grandfather) was born. Birth records for the 1830's and 1840's in Massachusetts are abundant, but usually the parent's birthplace was only listed by state or country. So I'm hoping there might be something in the files about their father!

I dont know about federal ones, the the few confed ones I've seen didnt

Well, I'll check them out and hope for the best! I will be worth the cost, because I will send one file on to a cousin who descends from one of the soldiers. And the other I'll hold onto, unless I find a living descendant of the other soldier. My own 3rd great-grandpa (the youngest of 12 children) did not fight - he was too young. But 4 of the 6 brothers DID fight.
Two of them died in the Civil War (one in Louisiana and one in Virginia), so if the records of the sons who lived to receive pensions don't give me information, I'll see if the widows of the other two filed for pensions, and check those out as well. If anything, it will give me a well-rounded family record!
I will report on my findings in the file, such as whether or not it gives more info on the parents and the father's immigration into the U.S.
