http://www.rootsweb.com is really good to use for mailing lists for either the surname you are researching, or for counties in a particular state, the only thing I DONT like about it is that (as much as I love Ancestry) they tout being free, yet every time you search for something they try to refer you over to ancestry.com

BUT the mailing lists are fantastic

even if I am going to end up being banned for emailing the lists with the link to here laugh.gif

Ok, I am catching a lot of flack for sending out mail about this board, somehow its being considered "commercial advertisting" (although I have NO idea how, its not like I charge or Im selling anything)

any ideas?

Bleh. Let the criticism roll of your back like water on duck.

I, for one, am glad you posted the link on those lists. And like you said, you're not gaining anything monetarily.

Another tool on the rootsweb site is the WorldConnect search engine. You can search for relatives that might be in the public family tree files of others. You can also use unique searches like one surname married to another surname, or people born in a certain location during a certain time frame.

The one big caveat is that you must consider any information found from this sight to be hearsay until you verify it elsewhere. But I have occasionally been able to link the families of distant relatives or find maiden names, etc. using this website.

Rootsweb's WorldConnect Global Search

Cheers!

I agree. It isn't as though other sites aren't mentioned frequently on those lists. Some even charge for services. My vote, tell the critisizers to build a bridge and get over it, the sooner the better. wink.gif

This afternoon I got a very nice email back from the admin of two AL lists, that loved the idea of the site and no problem with me posting it...I really appreciate that she took the time to check it out before sending back a rude threatening email.

So to the Admin of the lists for Lauderdale and Colbert Co Alabama....YOU ROCK dance.gif

I was able to find a good bit of info on rootsweb when I first started. However, its a bit frustrating now because I keep seeing familiar names and getting excited only to find that it is my own tree, lol. wallbash.gif

lol I hate when that happens!!!

My only complaint thus far is that my family is either not listed on the World Connect search or what I do find is either another person with the same dates or just flat out wrong. However, I have struck gold a few times. lol
