v. HANNAH ELIZABETH ADAMS was born May 24, 1845 in Gwinnett County GA, and died Feb 04, 1871 in Sneed, Blount County, Al. She married WILLIAM ISAH PRUETT Oct 25, 1865 in Gwinnett County GA, son of JOHN PRUETT and DEMARY TEAGLE. He was born Feb 15, 1843 in Georgia, and died Jul 24, 1925 in Sneed, Blount County, Al.
| Notes on William and Hannah came from Hal Pruett & Kaaren Saylor Hannah, know as Elizabeth by her husband, died of complications after having childbed fever soon after Elijah's birth. So there is no confusion, I want to clarify that two of William's wives, Hannah Elizabeth and Sarah L Adams, were sisters. Hannah and William came in a covered wagon when they moved from Gwinnett County, Georgia to Alabama. They lived first in Etoway County for awhile, then moved to Blount County. Grandpa Elijah called his mother "Elizabeth" because his daddy always called her Elizabeth. On March 18, 1878 William was appointed guardian of John Elijah "minor heir to David Cowan, deceased" An account of William Isah Pruett appeared in the Waterloo Tribune in 1897, stating that "the community was fortuante to have a gentleman like Mr. Pruitt, who has a leather-working shop at his place and does a excellent job" He also has a full stock of tools for saddle, harness and shoe work and has a good business. It also needs to be noted that William had a wife between Hannah and Sarah, he married Nancy Ratliff and had children with her as well. During the civil war, William served in Co. A 42nd Ga Infantry. He was captured at Vicksburg in July 4th 1863 and signed the oath on July 7th 1864. You can download his service record here William's service record |
3. vi. ELIJA D D ADAMS, b. February 14, 1849; d. September 01, 1885,and is presumed buried, becasue of family rememberance although no tombstone marks his place of rest, at Rock Springs UMC Lawrenceville GA. He married (1) LAURA M M WEBSTER March 14, 1872 in LAWRENCEVILLE,GA MIN-IRA A CORBAN. (2) MARY CAROLINE PRUITT, daughter of JOHN PRUITT and MARY TEAGLE. She was born February 22, 1848, and died July 11, 1937 and is buried in Norcross City Cemetery (with J.A.Adams, son).
| On February 8, 1873 Elija's mother Amanda deeded one half of the 125 acre Adams homestead to him with love and affection as noted in Gwinnett County Court Records. This land was purchased in 1837 and is land lot 112 in the 7th district of Gwinnett Co. This land stayed at the full 125 acres until 1911 when Elija's son Tandy died and 75 acres had to be sold so that his wife and children would have support. This is also from Gwinnett County Court records. Although Gwinnett County histories have little recorded information on the Adams family they did have the distinction of being one of the few families in the Counties history to have owned the same land for over 160 years. This land was originally obtained by Isham Williams in the Land Lottery when he drew for 250 acres. The Adams bought 125 acres in 1837. Arthur Adams and Ruby Jewell Adams obtained what was left from Robert E Lee Adams and each of their families lived on this land. Somewhere along the way this land lot changed numbers to Land Lot 115. Documents at the Gwinnett County Courthouse seem to say that all the remaining land has been sold off over the years piece by piece for projects such as the Rockwell Plant, and the Duluth Bypass, and other yet to be developed projects such as an agreement for a hotel and it appears that the last of it was sold to The Sugarloaf Group in April 1997. I cannot locate any of that land in the Adams name. The Gwinnett County Civic Center stands on a portion of the land that was owned by the Adams until the death of Tandy in 1911. Interstate 85 was put down on a portion of the land also. It is the writers opinion that the legacy left by Elijah and Amanda Adams has disappeared in the name of progress and that the family is no longer in the elite group as before mentioned. But, as information is not forthcoming I could be wrong. Land deed records are copied from the orignal document in the deed books at the Gwinnett Co Courthouse |

Tandy died after a "severe illness of the head". He was a member of the Odd Fellows and the preacher that conducted the funeral service admonished the group saying that they weren't to be around church people. It is interesting to note that the Adams lost 75 of their original 125 acres of land to the county after his death for the support of Ida and their 5 children. They also lost their mule, some household and kitchen furniture, a buggy and wagon and harness, 4 cows, 1 hog, gun and a watch. Source of the land loss if from the copy of the application for twelve months support made by Ida Abi Adams which is located at the Gwinnett Co Courthouse. |
iii. JOHN A ADAMS, b. September 15, 1880; d. March 14, 1941 and is buried at Norcross City Cemetery. He married AMANDA ROBERTS 1896. She was born September 21, 1880 in Lumpkin Co, and died December 29, 1949 and is buried at Norcross City Cemetery
Family sources say that after John moved to Norcross he rented a place for fifty cents (I am not sure how often this was paid) and operated a blacksmith shop. The house John was raised in is still occupied by an Adams. He was 5 years old when his stepfather George Whitley was shot and killed by his mother.![]() Col.John A Adams, grandson of Mary Caroline, with the Ithaca 12g double barrell shotgun manufactured 5-25-1880 that killed George Whitley
